Ram 3.6L Oil Change (2008 – 2018)

Perform your own Ram 3.6L oil change to save money and be sure it was done right. This article applies to the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 model year Ram 1500 equipped with the 3.6L engine. For more Ram specific articles, visit our Ram category page.

Tools Needed:

  • 13mm wrench or socket and ratchet
  • 24mm socket and ratchet or 24mm wrench
  • Oil fill funnel
  • Oil Drain pan with at least 6 qt capacity
  • Clean rag

Ram 3.6L Oil Change Procedure:

  • Warm truck up to operating temp
  • Check engine oil level on dipstick to verify no prior issues
  • Remove engine oil pan drain plug using the 13mm wrench (or socket at ratchet) and drain all engine oil into drain pan
  • Loosen oil filter cap from housing the 24mm socket and ratchet
  • Remove oil filter cap assembly
  • Remove and replace O ring from oil filter cap
  • Install oil filter into cap
  • Reinstall oil filter cap (with filter) into oil filter housing using the 24mm socket and ratchet
  • Reinstall and tighten oil drain plug using 13mm wrench
  • Fill engine with 5.7 quarts of engine oil with oil fill funnel and reinstall oil fill cap
  • Start engine to let oil circulate (Check for any leaks or abnormalities while running) and shut engine back down
  • Check engine oil level & top off if necessary

When the oil change is complete, perform the oil life reset to accurately track engine oil life
