Ram TRX Oil Change (2021+)

A complete guide to performing a Ram TRX oil change. This guide is specific to 2021 and 2022 model year Ram 1500 TRX trucks equipped with the 6.2L supercharged engine. The procedure is similar to most other trucks with the additional step of draining the oil cooler. For more additional Ram specific guides, check out our Ram section.

Tools Needed:

  • 13mm socket and ratchet
  • 15mm socket and ratchet or wrench
  • Adjustable wrench
  • 16mm socket, extension and ratchet
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Funnel
  • Oil drain pan (8+ quart capacity)

Ram TRX Oil Change Procedure:

  • Make sure truck is parked on a level spot (most will find they will fit under the truck to work with out raising the front end)
  • Check engine oil level on dip stick to verify no prior issues and remove engine oil fill cap
  • Remove the front skid plate using the 16mm socket, extension and ratchet to remove the 4 rear most mounting bolts, loosening the 2 front bolts and sliding the skid plate out and away
  • Remove engine oil drain plug using the 13mm socket and ratchet and let engine oil drain into drain pan
  • When fully drained, reinstall engine oil pan drain plug
  • Locate the engine oil cooler which is in front of the engine, above the skid plate that was earlier removed
  • Bracing the oil cooler fitting with the adjustable wrench, remove the drain plug with the 15mm socket or wrench and let all oil drain into the drain pan
  • When it is fully drained reinstall and tighten the drain plug
  • Remove engine oil filter and clean base it was removed from
  • Lubricate new engine oil filter o ring and install
  • Using the funnel, fill engine with 7.5 quarts of fresh engine oil
  • Reinstall engine oil fill cap
  • Start engine and let it run for 30 seconds or until engine oil pressure builds as normal and shut engine back off
  • Check engine oil level on dip stick and add or remove engine oil if needed
