Ram Cummins Fuel Filter Change (2019+)
Perform the Ram Cummins fuel filter change at its specified service intervals to keep it running as well as it can. It is not recommended and not needed to prefill the fuel filters, doing so will increase the chances of contaminants entering the fuel system. This article is specifically for the 6.7L Cummins found in Ram 2500, 3500, 4500, & 5500 trucks in 2019, 2020, and 2021 model years. To perform an oil change on this truck, follow this guide. Tools Needed:
- 1 1/8” socket and ratchet
- 12” extension and swivel
- Phillips head screwdriver (the longer the better)
- Drain pan

Ram Cummins Fuel Filter Change Procedure:
- Verify the ignition is in the OFF position
- Locate the fuel filter housing under the hood on the drivers side
- Locate the yellow fuel filter drain
- Put the drain pan under the fuel filter housing
- Turn the drain counter clock wise to drain using the Phillips head screw driver. Let it drain into the pan (some will splash and spill)
- Remove the fuel filter cap using the 1 1/8” socket, swivel, extension and ratchet
- Remove and replace the cartridge style fuel filter and fuel filter cap O ring
- Lubricate the fuel filter cap O ring and reinstall cap to housing
- Tighten fuel filter housing drain
- Locate the fuel and water separator between the frame rails under the cab
- Place the drain pan under it and loosen the drain to drain the diesel out
- Using the 1 1/8” socket and ratchet, remove the filter cap
- Remove and replace filter element and O ring
- Retighten filter cap
- Cycle the key to the ON position and leave it there until you hear the fuel pump stop priming (If it is a push button ignition, push it once with your foot not on the brake)
- Turn the key to the OFF position, and then back on – repeat this cycle 3 times
