DT466 High Pressure Oil Pump Leak: Ferry Plug
A DT466 high pressure oil pump leak is one of the most common issues found on these International engines. While there are a few reasons a high pressure oil pump (HPOP) could leak oil, the most common issue is it to leak past the threads and O ring on the ferry plug, found on the back of the HPOP facing the engine block. To replace the ferry plug, it is recommended to remove the HPOP due to there being a small metal ball which will fall out underneath the plug. This article applies to all DT466 engines equipped with a HPOP, however specifics such as wrench or socket size could be different from engine to engine. The engine this article is based off of was found in a 2000 International 4700 DT466E. For other International specific guides, visit the International category page.

International DT466 High Pressure Oil Pump Leak Inspection Procedure:
- Clean all oil and grime from high pressure oil pump found mounted to the front of the drivers side of the engine
- Warm engine to operating temp
- Using a mirror or scope, inspect the ferry plug found on the bottom of the HPOP facing the engine block
- If any engine oil is found around ferry plug but not above it, the ferry plug is the leak and it will need to be replaced / resealed
International DT466 High Pressure Oil pump Ferry Plug Replacement
- Disconnect wire connector located on the bottom of the HPOP by releasing the metal clip and pulling the connector away
- Place an oil drain pan under high pressure oil pump
- Disconnect the steel braided oil line and move it away from the pump
- Loosen both fuel lines (steel tubes) and remove the rear one by loosening it from the fuel filter housing as well
- Using the 10mm socket, extension and ratchet, remove the 3 HPOP mounting bolts
- Slide HPOP out from the engine and place on work bench
- Face the ferry plug up and remove from the HPOP using the 13mm wrench (take note to keep HPOP facing up, there is a metal ball below the ferry plug which can fall out)
- Replace ferry plug
- Remove and replace HPOP mounting O ring using the pick
- Reinstall HPOP using the reverse procedure
- Prime fuel system using the hand primer on the fuel filter housing (air was put in the fuel system when the tubes were disconnected)
- Start engine and check for any leaks or abnormalities
