Land Rover Defender Oil Change (2020+ 3.0L)

Perform your own Land Rover Defender oil change and you can save money while making sure it is done right. This article is specific to the 2020, 2021, and 2022 model year Defenders equipped with the P400 3.0L engine. There are skid plates that need to be lowered to access the oil pan drain plug but it is not difficult to do. The engine oil filter is a cartridge style filter located below the upper engine cover.

Tools Needed:

  • 13mm socket and ratchet for the drain plug
  • 27mm socket and ratchet
  • Clean rag
  • 9 quart oil drain pan
  • Funnel

2020+ Land Rover Defender 3.0L Oil Change Procedure:

  • Park SUV in a level spot
  • Check engine oil level to verify there are no prior issues
  • Raise front end if it is needed to get under the front end to remove the skid plates
  • Remove engine oil fill cap
  • Pull straight up on the plastic engine cover to access the engine oil filter
  • Remove lower skid plates to access the engine oil drain plug
  • Using the 13mm socket and ratchet, loosen the drain plug and drain all engine oil into the drain pan
  • When all oil is drained, reinstall the drain plug into the oil pan
  • Using the 27mm socket and ratchet, remove the oil filter cap
  • Discard the old oil filter and replace with new
  • Replace the oil filter cap O ring if the new oil filter came with a new one
  • Fill engine with 8.5 quarts of engine oil and reinstall the oil fill cap
  • Start engine let it run until oil pressure builds (around 10 – 20 seconds) and turn off engine
  • Check engine oil level and adjust if necessary
  • Reinstall upper engine cover and lower skid plates
  • Lower front end if it was raised previously
