Jeep Cherokee Oil Change

A Jeep Cherokee oil change is a simple task that anyone can do in their driveway or garage. This guide is specific to vehicles with the 3.2L engine from 2013 – 2021 model years. With a top mounted canister style oil filter accessed through the engine cover, the oil change is quick and clean to do. Tools Needed:

  • 13mm or 1/2″ socket or wrench
  • 10mm socket
  • 24mm 6 point socket with extension
  • Ratchet for above sockets
  • Oil drain pan with at least a 6 quart capacity
  • Shop towel or rags
  • Ramps or a jack with jack stands

Jeep Cherokee Oil Change Procedure:

  • Park vehicle in a level spot
  • Warm engine to operating temp
  • Raise front end by driving it on to ramps or using the jack to set it on jack stands
  • Remove the engine oil fill cap and check the oil level on dipstick to check for any prior issues
  • Remove the engine oil filter access panel on the top of the engine by rotating the circular panel counter clockwise
  • Using the 24mm socket, extension and ratchet, loosen the oil filter housing until you break the O rings seal to let the engine oil in the housing drain
  • If your vehicle has a skid plate covering the drain plug, remove the panel using the 10mm socket and ratchet
  • Place the oil drain pan under and remove the engine oil drain plug
  • Let all engine oil drain from the oil pan
  • Reinstall and tighten the engine oil drain pan
  • Reinstall the skid plate access panel if equipped
  • Remove the oil filter cap
  • Remove and replace the oil filter element
  • Using the pick, remove oil filter cap o ring
  • Lubricate the oil filter cap o ring and reinstall to oil filter housing – seat the cap but do not over tighten it or it may break
  • Reinstall the engine oil filter access panel
  • Fill engine with 5.9 quarts of new engine oil using the funnel
  • Reinstall engine oil fill cap
  • Start engine to let oil pressure build and shut it back down
  • If it is on ramps, drive the vehicle off the ramps or lower it from the jack stands using the jack
  • Once on level ground, check the engine oil level on the dip stick – adjust if needed
