Cummins ISX Exhaust Pressure Sensor
The Cummins ISX exhaust pressure sensor measures exhaust back pressure from the exhaust manifold. It is a commonly overlooked sensor however when it fails, it can cause active fault codes and lead to engine derate. These sensors can fail with internal open or shorts, as well as become plugged with soot inhibiting correct readings. There is a pipe to the sensor from the exhaust manifold which can also become plugged or leak throwing off pressure readings also. This article is specific to Cummins ISX15 and X15 engines. For a guide of the Cummins DEF doser, visit our guide.
Sensor Location:
The back pressure sensor reads exhaust manifold back pressure how ever it is not mounted directly to it. Pressure is lead from a small pipe to a manifold block bolted to the head. The sensor is then threaded into this block. It is located above the exhaust manifold on the drivers side of the engine, towards the front of the head.

Cummins ISX Exhaust Pressure Sensor Replacement Procedure:
- Park truck in a safe spot and make sure the ignition key is removed or in the OFF position
- Locate the sensor
- Remove the connector locking clip if applicable
- Slide connector lock to disengage it
- Press the connector tab in and pull up on the connector away from the sensor
- Using a deep well 1 1/16” socket, loosen the sensor from the manifold
- Remove the sensor and check for any obstruction in the manifold
- If it is clear, install the new sensor in the reverse order of removal
- Cycle the key on to make sure there are no new faults, if there are stored faults be sure to clear them using the appropriate diagnostic tool
