Ram 6.4 Oil Change (2014+)
A Ram 6.4 oil change is a simple task anybody can do in their own driveway or garage. Found in the Ram 2500 and 3500 Ram trucks, this is the current standard gas engine. This article applies to the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 model year Ram Trucks equipped with the Hemi 6.4 engine. For other Ram specific guides, visit the Ram category page.
Tools Needed:
- 13mm (1/2” SAE) wrench or 13mm (1/2” SAE) socket and ratchet
- Oil filter wrench or pliers
- Funnel
- Oil Drain pan with at least 7 qt capacity
- Clean rag

- 7 quarts 0W40 engine oil – 7 quart capacity
- Oil filter – Wix 57060 or equivalent filter
Ram 6.4 Oil Change Procedure:
- Park truck on a level spot and warm engine to operating temp
- Check the engine oil level and condition on dipstick to verify no prior issues
- Remove engine oil fill cap
- Loosen oil pan drain plug using the 13mm (1/2”) wrench or socket / ratchet and drain all engine oil into the drain pan
- Remove the oil filter (located to the right of the crank pulley on the front of the engine) using a oil filter wrench or pliers if necessary, some engine oil will drain with the filter
- Clean oil filter and drain plug mating surfaces
- Lubricate new engine oil filter o ring with fresh engine oil
- Spin on new engine oil filter to oil filter housing
- Reinstall and tighten oil drain plug using 13mm (1/2”) wrench or socket / ratchet
- Fill engine with 7.0 quarts of new engine oil with oil fill funnel and reinstall oil fill cap
- Start the engine to let engine oil circulate (Check for any leaks or abnormalities while it is running) and shut the engine back down
- Check engine oil level and dipstick & top off if necessary
