2.8L Duramax Fuel Filter Change
This article goes over the 2.8L Duramax Fuel filter change. This applies to both the Diesel Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. To perform an oil change on these trucks, follow these guides: Diesel Colorado oil change or Diesel Canyon oil change.
Tools Needed:
- 27mm socket and ratchet for the fuel filter canister
- Torque wrench
- Pick or flat head screw driver to remove oil filter O ring
- Drain pan

2.8L Duramax Fuel Filter Change Procedure:
- Make sure the key is in the OFF position
- The manual states to disconnect the battery ground cable, however as long as the key is in the OFF position, it should not be necessary
- Locate the fuel filter housing and place your catch pan under it
- Drain the fuel filter housing by loosening the drain
- Using the 27mm socket and ratchet, remove both fuel filter caps
- Remove and discard both fuel filters and O rings
- Install new fuel filters and O rings on caps
- Reinstall both fuel filter caps and torque to 15 ft lbs
- Tighten fuel filter housing drain plug
- Cycle the ignition key to the ON position to prime the fuel system And leave there for 30 seconds
- Cycle the key to the OFF position and then back ON – Repeat this cycle 3 times
- Start engine to verify no issues
- If the engine shuts down, repeat the steps to prime the fuel system
