Volvo XC90 Oil Change (2016+)
While it may be a different procedure than other cars, the Volvo XC90 oil change is still a simple procedure that anyone can do. The oil filter requires a specialty tool to remove however it is inexpensive and worth it to get your own. If more height is required to access the skid plate from underneath, use drive on ramps or a jack with jack stands to raise the front end. Find more Volvo specific how to guides in our Volvo section.
Tools Needed:
- 17mm socket and ratchet or 17mm wrench
- Volvo specific oil filter removal socket
- Oil drain pan with more than 6.2 quart capacity
- T30 bit socket
- 6mm Allen wrench

- 0W20 engine oil (5.9 – 6.2 qt capacity)
- Fram oil filter CH11816 or equivalent part from other manufacturer
2016+ Volvo XC90 Oil Change Procedure:
- Park SUV in a safe and level spot
- Warm engine up to temperature
- Remove engine oil filter cap and set it aside
- Lower skid plate by using the T30 bit socket
- Place oil drain pan under drain plug and remove the oil drain plug using the 17mm socket or wrench
- When oil is fully drained, reinstall and tighten the engine oil pan drain plug
- Place the oil drain pan under the oil filter housing
- Using the 6mm Allen wrench, loosen the drain bolt and let all oil drain from the filter housing
- Remove the oil filter housing using the oil filter removal tool
- Remove and replace the oil filter cartridge and housing O ring (lubricate O ring with fresh engine oil)
- Install oil filter housing with new filter
- Reinstall skid plate
- Fill engine with 5.9 quarts of 0W20 engine oil and reinstall oil fill cap
- Start engine, let it run to build oil pressure, and shut it back down
- Check engine oil level using the center display and top off engine oil if it reads low
