6.4 Powerstroke Oil Change
Perform your own Forc 6.4 Powerstroke oil change to stay on top of your engines maintenance. While the 6.4 Powerstroke is not known for its cheap or easy maintenance, an oil change is one of the most important things to do to make sure it stays in top condition. It uses a top mounted canister style oil filter which is different than many engines but is not any harder than conventional styles. To perform a fuel filter change on a truck equipped with the 6.4 Powerstroke engine, view this other guide.

6.4 Powerstroke Oil Change Procedure:
- Park vehicle in a safe and level spot
- Check engine oil level on dip stick to verify no prior issues – If it is above full it could be caused by fuel dilution and if it is below it may be burning oil
- Remove engine oil fill cap
- Using the 36mm socket, loosen the engine oil filter cap found on top of the engine
- Unscrew the engine oil filter cap until the O rings seal has broken – This will let the oil filter housing fully drain before it is removed
- Place the drain pan under the oil drain plug
- Remove the engine oil drain plug using the 19mm wrench or socket and let the engine oil fully drain into the pan
- Reinstall and tighten engine oil drain plug
- Remove the engine oil filter cap with the oil filter
- Discard of the old engine oil filter and install new to the cap
- Remove and replace engine oil filter cap o ring
- Lubricate engine oil filter cap o ring and install to housing – fully seat the cap and o ring to the housing but do not over tighten or it could break
- Fill engine with 14.5 quarts of engine oil using the funnel and reinstall the oil fill cap
- Start engine and let the oil pressure build
- Shut down engine and wait for engine oil to settle
- Check engine oil level on the dip stick and add more if needed to reach the full mark
