6.4 Powerstroke Fuel Filter Change
With a 20,000 mile service interval, the Ford 6.4 Powerstroke fuel filter change is a necessary task when you own one. Staying on top of changing your fuel filters is one of the easiest ways to make sure your diesel engine is running at its best performance level. It is also a good practice to change your filters when your water in fuel light comes on, in addition to draining the water and fuel separator. Equipped with 2 canister style fuel filters, changing them is not difficult however the lower one could be messy if not done correctly. - O Ring pick
- Drain pan

6.4 Powerstroke Fuel Filter Change Procedure:
- Park vehicle in a level spot
- Make sure the ignition key is either in the OFF position or removed
- Locate the lower fuel and water separator found above the front axle on the drivers side – mounted inside the frame rail
- Place your drain pan under it and swing the drain lever forward
- While the fuel water separator is draining locate the fuel filter housing on top of the motor – there are 2 canisters on top of the engine, the one on the drivers side is the fuel filter
- Using the 36mm socket and ractchet, loosen and remove the fuel filter cap
- Remove and discard the old fuel filter
- Make sure there is no sediment or debris in the fuel filter housing – If there is, clean it out
- Remove and replace the fuel filter cap O ring using the pick
- Install the new fuel filter to the fuel filter cap
- Reinstall the fuel filter cap to the housing until the O ring and cap is fully seated
- Once the fuel water separator is fully drained, remove the cap using the 36mm socket and ratchet
- Remove and replace the filter element
- Using the pick, remove and replace the cap O ring
- Reinstall the fuel water separator cap to the housing
- Cycle the key from the OFF position to the ON position and leave it there for 30 seconds
- Repeat the ignition key cycle 3 times to prime the fuel system
- Start the engine – long cranking is normal but if it does not start repeat the 3 ignition key cycles and try again
