Honda Pilot Oil Change (2016+)

A 2016+ Honda Pilot oil change is an easy way to save money. Ensure your engines longevity by staying on top of your scheduled service intervals. This guide is specific to the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 Honda Pilot model years equipped with the 3.5L engine. The 2019, 2020, and 2021 Honda Passport oil change procedure should be similar as well.

Tools Needed:

  • 17mm socket and ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Funnel
  • Oil Drain pan with at least 6 quart capacity
  • Clean rag
  • Vehicle ramps or jack stands and a jack

Honda Pilot Oil Change Procedure:

  • Warm engine to operating temp to suspend contaminants in the oil. Warmer oil will also drain faster and more completely.
  • Check engine oil level on dip stick
  • Drive vehicle onto ramps or lift with a jack and secure with jack stands
  • Remove oil drain plug using the 17mm socket / ratchet and let the engine oil drain into the drain pan
  • Remove oil filter (use oil filter wrench if it is too tight)
  • Clean oil drain plug and oil filter mounting surfaces
  • Lubricate new oil filter O ring with fresh oil and install filter
  • Reinstall and tighten oil drain plug – Torque is 29 lb ft if a torque wrench is available
  • Fill engine with 5.5 quarts of new engine oil using oil fill funnel and reinstall oil fill cap
  • Lower vehicle off jacks or drive off ramps
  • Restart engine for 10 seconds or until oil pressure builds and turn engine back off
  • Check engine oil level on level ground & top off if necessary
  • Reset your maintenance minder
