Honda HRV Oil Change (2016+)
A 2016+ Honda HRV oil change is a simple way to save money and stay on top of your car’s service schedule. This vehicle shares its platform with the Honda Fit, but is made easier due to the extra ground clearance. The guide is specific to the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 Honda HRV oil model years equipped with the 1.8L engine. The oil change interval is every 3000 – 10000 miles or every 12 months, the oil change minder light will come on when it is due.
Tools Needed:
- 17mm wrench
- Flat head or phillips screw driver (depends on skid plate clip style)
- Filter wrench
- Oil fill funnel
- Drain pan with at least 4 quart capacity
- Clean rag
- Vehicle ramps or a jack and jack stands

- 4 quarts 0W20 engine oil (3.9 qt capacity)
- Oil filter – WIX 57356 or equivalent filter
- Drain plug crush washer (optional)
Honda HRV Oil Change Procedure:
- Warm engine to operating temp
- Check engine oil level on dipstick and take note if it is low to check and/or add oil in between services
- Raise the front end by driving onto the ramps or using the jack and jack stands
- Remove the skid plate if equipped using the screw driver to remove the perimeter plastic clips
- Loosen the oil drain plug using the 17mm wrench and drain the oil into the oil pan
- Remove oil filter (use oil filter wrench if necessary)
- Clean oil drain plug and oil filter mounting surfaces
- Lubricate new oil filter O ring and install
- Remove and replace engine oil drain plug crush washer
- Reinstall and tighten oil drain plug
- Fill engine with 3.5 quarts of engine oil with oil fill funnel and reinstall oil fill cap
- Start engine to let oil circulate (Check for any leaks or abnormalities while running) and shut engine back down
- Reinstall skid plate if equipped
- Lower the front end by driving off the ramps or using the jack and jack stands
- Check engine oil level when it is on level ground & add oil if needed
- Reset your maintenance minder dash light
