GMC Canyon Oil Change (2015+ 3.6L)

Performing a GMC Canyon oil change is a simple task and one of the most important things you can do to keep your truck running properly. This guide is for 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 model year trucks equipped with the 3.6L Gas V6 engine. For a 2015+ GMC Canyon oil change when equipped with a 2.8L Duramax engine, follow this guide.

Tools and Supplies Needed:

  • 15mm socket and ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • 24mm socket and ratchet for the oil filter canister
  • Oil fill funnel
  • Oil Drain pan with at least 6 qt capacity
  • Clean rag

Parts needed:

GMC Canyon Oil Change Procedure:

  • Warm truck up to operating temp
  • Check engine oil level on dipstick to verify no prior issues
  • Remove oil pan drain plug using the 15mm wrench and let the engine oil drain into the drain pan
  • Using the 24mm socket, remove the oil filter canister
  • Remove and discard the oil filter and oil filter canister o ring
  • Install new oil filter and O ring canister (Torque to 22 ft lbs)
  • Lube oil filter O ring and reinstall canister
  • Reinstall and tighten engine oil drain plug to 18 ft lbs
  • Fill engine with 5.5 quarts of engine oil with oil fill funnel and reinstall oil fill cap
  • Start engine to let oil circulate (Check for any leaks or abnormalities while running) and shut engine back down)
  • Check engine oil level & top off if necessary
