Ford 5.4L Engine Oil Change (1998 – 2009)

A Ford 5.4L Engine oil change is a simple way to keep your engine running in top shape. Tools Needed:

  • 16mm wrench or socket and ratchet
  • Oil filter pliers or wrench
  • Fluid drain pan with at least 7 quart capacity
  • Engine oil fill funnel
  • Clean rag

Ford 5.4L Engine Oil Change Procedure:

  • Warm engine to operating temp to help oil drain easily and quickly
  • Inspect engine oil on dipstick to verify no issues (low oil or discoloration)
  • Loosen the oil pan drain plug and let oil drain into pan using the 16mm wrench or socket and ratchet
  • Remove engine oil filter – use oil filter pliers if it is too tight to remove by hand (place a drain pan underneath it to make to catch excess oil that will drain)
  • Install new engine oil filter
  • Reinstall and tighten oil drain plug
  • Fill with 6 quarts of engine oil with oil fill funnel and reinstall oil cap (Different trucks and set ups will require different capacities, start with 6 quarts and add more if needed)
  • Start engine to let oil circulate (Check for any leaks or abnormalities while running) and shut engine back down
  • Check engine oil & top off if necessary
