Mazda CX-9 Oil Change (2016+)
Performing your own Mazda CX-9 oil change is the most important piece of routine maintenance you will have to do. Luckily, it is also simple to do in your own driveway or garage. This guide is specific to the 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 model year Mazda CX-9 equipped with the 2.5L turbocharged engine. Tools Needed:
- 8mm socket
- 8mm Allen socket
- Ratchet for above 2 sockets
- Flat head screw driver
- Oil filter pliers
- Funnel
- Oil Drain pan with at least 5 quart capacity
- A clean rag or paper towel
- Jack and jack stands or vehicle ramps

- Engine oil – 5 quarts of 5W30 engine oil (4.8 qt capacity)
- Oil filter – Wix 57002
Mazda CX-9 Oil Change Procedure:
- Warm engine to operating temp
- Check engine oil level on dipstick to verify no prior issues
- Raise front end of vehicle using by driving onto the ramps or jacking it up and setting on jack stands
- Take down the skid plate directly below the oil pan using the flat head screw driver to remove the plastic clips and the 8mm socket and ratchet for the 2 metal screws
- Remove engine oil drain plug using the 8mm allen socket and ratchet and let the engine oil drain into the drain pan
- Remove oil filter using the oil filter pliers (loosen filter and left oil drain from filter before taking down to avoid making a mess)
- Clean oil drain plug and oil filter mounting surfaces
- Lubricate new oil filter O ring with fresh oil and install
- Reinstall and tighten oil drain plug
- Fill engine with 4.8 quarts of engine oil with oil fill funnel and reinstall oil fill cap
- Start engine to let oil circulate (Check for any leaks or abnormalities while running) and shut engine back down
- Reinstall skid plate access panel
- Lower front end by backing off ramps or lowering off jack stands
- When front end is on level ground, check engine oil level & top off if necessary
