Canyon Diesel Oil Change (GMC 2015+)
Follow this guide to perform a GMC Canyon Diesel Oil Change. With a cartridge style oil filter, some might say the oil change is more difficult than others, however once understood it makes it easier with less mess. This article is specifically for trucks equipped with the 2.8L Duramax Diesel engine. To change the fuel filters on the 2.8L Duramax, follow this guide.
Tools Needed:
- 15mm socket and ratchet (a 3” extension will help make it easier)
- Torque wrench
- 27mm socket and ratchet for the oil filter canister
- Pick or flat head screw driver to remove oil filter O ring
- Oil fill funnel
- Oil Drain pan with at least 6 qt capacity
- Clean rag

- Engine oil – 5W30 (6 quart oil capacity)
- Oil filter – AC Delco PF2262G or equivalent aftermarket filter
GMC Canyon Diesel Oil Change Procedure:
- Warm motor up to operating temp
- Check engine oil level on dipstick to verify no prior issues
- Remove oil pan drain plug using the 15mm socket, ratchet, and extension
- Using the 27mm socket and ratchet, remove the oil filter canister
- Remove and discard the oil filter and oil filter canister o ring
- Install new oil filter and oil filter O ring using the pick or flat head screwdriver
- Lubricate oil filter o ring with fresh engine oil
- Reinstall and torque oil filter canister to 18 ft lb
- Reinstall and tighten oil drain plug to 18 ft lb using the 15mm socket and torque wrench
- Fill engine with 5.5 quarts of engine oil with oil fill funnel and reinstall oil fill cap
- Start engine to let oil circulate (Check for any leaks or abnormalities while running) and shut the engine back down
- Check engine oil level & top off if necessary
