Toyota 4Runner Oil Change – 2010+
Performing a Toyota 4Runner oil change is a simple way to keep your engine in top condition. The 4.0L engine is known to be a reliable engine and this simple maintenance will keep it running right.
Tools Needed:
- 10mm, 12mm, & 14mm sockets and ratchet
- 64mm oil filter socket
- Oil fill funnel
- Oil Drain pan with at least 7 qt capacity
- Clean rag

Toyota 4Runner Oil Change Procedure:
- Warm truck to operating temp
- Check engine oil on dipstick to verify no prior issues
- Remove the access panel below the engine oil drain plug using the 12mm socket
- Loosen the oil pan drain plug using the 14mm socket and let the engine oil drain into the drain pan
- Remove the front plastic skid plate cover below the oil filter using the 10mm socket
- With the plastic skid plate cover removed, remove the metal skid plate below the engine oil filter using the 12mm socket
- If new oil filter comes with filter drain tool, remove oil filter drain and install spout to drain (if not housing can be removed to drain but it will be messy)
- Remove oil filter cartridge using 64mm oil filter socket
- Remove and replace oil filter with new O ring on housing
- Install oil filter housing
- Clean oil drain plug and oil filter mounting surfaces
- Reinstall and tighten oil drain plug using 14mm wrench
- Reinstall all removed skid plates and covers
- Fill engine with 6.6 quarts of engine oil with oil fill funnel and reinstall oil fill cap
- Start engine to let oil circulate (Check for any leaks or abnormalities while running) and shut engine back down
- Check engine oil & top off if necessary
- Reset the maintenance required light
